Technology Connections

Gosh I miss watching that show. I wish YouTube hadn't lathered on the ads or ad-free extortion so heavily that I can't go there anymore. What I want is a 24/7 streaming channel showing Technology Connections videos that doesn't involve being mentally extracted every 5 minutes by a belligerent ad.

Speaking of ads, maybe you can tell that they aren't my favorite. You might even say that they are one of my least favorite things in the world. I think many people would agree on their unsavoriness. I am to the point that if I see a paid advertisement, it is likely going to damage my perception of that product. Especially when they are integrated everywhere, without careful thought.

This unseen reaction from their captive audience must be especially tragic for the indie developer who is attempting to extend their visibility with ads. The indie developer doesn't have ability to engineer the years of careful persistence needed to make the advertising system work for them, and they are paying giants what they can to effectively bury their passions under sacrificed funds and unlikely expectations.

Those who use ads to fund their indie websites are another story. I really can't understand how someone who loves what they made would destroy it with intrusive ads. So, I am left to assume that people who do use out-of-the-box ad integrations do not love what they made.

Of course there is a small caveat, there is a very small proportion of websites that have integrated their own low-stress sponsorship messages successfully. This is such a delicate and unusual thing that I don't think most indie developers can look to it as a viable monetization approach until they are already very well established. Likewise, being able to sponsor one of these premium curated spots seems like a feat that is well out of reach for most indie developers.

So what's a guy to do who has something to show the world? I imagine someone is asking. I think there are still many avenues available that don't involve elevating the blood-pressure for a mass of people in exchange for the slim possibility of momentarily distracting a few fools to come your way.

I really appreciate when websites invite their visitors to share their work. I think it provides an alternative that satisfies both the creator seeking to put themselves out there, and for the thoughtful user who is open to discovering valuable inventions.

So why do these announcements feel different than advertisements? Well first, I think a glaring difference between an ad that is awful and an announcement that is appreciated is about consent and forum.

So with all of this out of the way, let's set the stage for a few thoughtful announcements here. Here I want to provide consent and a forum to hear about your independent work. Let's have a technology connection.

Are you an artist? Give us a link. Are you a developer? Show us your site. Whatever you do, if you are the one who has done it and have documented it online, please share.

Please keep in mind this is not the forum to overtly sell something. This is not free ad space. This is also not a place to farm clicks for your unfortunate ad integrations. This is a show-and-tell about what you made, because you put love into it. I welcome you to increase your visibility to those who may support you (one way or another, one day) by freely sharing your valuable work today.

If your work contains 3rd party ad integrations or anything else that could be malicious to our users your link will be removed.

When you are ready, please leave a comment about your work with a link. If you are exploring indie links here, feel free to kindly let us all know what you find and what you think.
